Before You Download

Choose the Windows Install Option
Microsoft Store - recommended
Use this for the cleanest Windows install path. It avoids the trust warning that can appear with direct installers and is the recommended option for most users.
Direct Download
Use this if you prefer a standalone installer. Because the direct app build is not certificate-signed yet, Windows may ask you to confirm that you trust the app before running it.
First Launch Setup

Create or sign in to your Lexa account
After installing, open Lexa and sign in with Google or with your email and password, or register a new account. The account step happens before you configure translation.

Choose the app language
The first setup screen asks you to select the language of the app. This only changes Lexa's own interface, not the language being translated.

Set the translation languages
On the Languages step, set "You want to translate texts from" to Japanese for a Japanese VN, and set "To" to the language you want to read in, such as English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Then choose Finish Setup.

Tell Lexa what you want to translate
Lexa then asks what you want to translate. Pick Visual Novel, and Lexa will point you to the modes that suit it. On some Windows versions, Lexa may also offer to hide the yellow Windows capture border; that step is optional.

Keep Current screen or pick the VN window
After the Almost ready summary, choose Continue. Current screen is selected by default and translates anything visible on that monitor. To follow one app, pick your VN from Open apps instead. Then choose Open Lexa toolbar.
Choose the Right Mode for a Visual Novel
The Lexa toolbar opens with four modes: Realtime, Watch, Cursor, and Write. The ? button on the toolbar opens a short guide to each one. Every mode can also be started with a keyboard shortcut, and you can change those shortcuts, or hide modes you do not use, in Settings under Modes & shortcuts.
Realtime for dialogue
Use Realtime for the main VN text box. You place a frame over the area where dialogue appears, and Lexa translates again every time the line changes, so you can keep clicking through the story.
Cursor for menus and single items
Use Cursor for a choice, a menu entry, an item description, a launcher message, or any single piece of text. Drag a box around it and the translation appears in a small window. It translates once per selection.
Watch for screens full of labels
Use Watch when text is scattered across the window, like a settings page, a save screen, or a map. Lexa detects text in the selected screen or window, and you hover over a piece of text to see its translation.
Write outside the VN flow
Use Write when you want to type or paste text yourself, such as a phrase to look up or a reply in another language. It does not read your screen, so it is usually less important for normal VN reading.

Older tutorials may mention Snapshot and Snipping. They are still in Lexa as optional modes, but they are off by default. If you want them, turn them on in Settings under Modes & shortcuts, in the More modes group.

Translate Your First VN Scene

Open a normal dialogue line
Start from a stable scene, not the title screen, backlog, save menu, opening movie, or a heavily animated cutscene.

Start Realtime and place the frame
Choose Realtime on the toolbar, or press Ctrl+Alt+F8. A frame appears on top of the game: drag it and pull its edges until it covers only the dialogue box. The panel beside it shows the latest translated lines.

Use Cursor when a choice or menu appears
If a choice, menu, or settings label appears outside the dialogue box, choose Cursor (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and drag a box around that text instead of moving the Realtime frame.

Adjust only if the first line is wrong
If the translation does not update or picks up extra UI text, resize the Realtime frame or check the selected screen or window before changing translation methods. Pause on the frame holds the current translation; closing the frame ends the session.
What to Skip at First
Keep the first test simple
- Install from Microsoft Store when you want the simplest trusted Windows flow
- Finish signup and language setup before opening modes
- Use Realtime mode for the normal VN dialogue box
- Use Cursor mode for choices, menus, items, and one-off UI elements
- Change shortcuts later in Settings, under Modes & shortcuts, once you know your preferred modes
Skip until you know you need it
- Start with the direct installer if you are uncomfortable approving an unsigned app prompt
- Assume the app language is the same as the language you translate from or to
- Stretch the Realtime frame over the whole screen to catch every UI element when Cursor mode is faster
- Judge the setup from a stylized title screen, opening animation, or backlog screen
